Defending the right to protest

NSW Parliament today saw environment groups, unionists, farmers, traditional Aboriginal owners, activists and MPs from the Greens, Labor and the CDP rally together to support the right to protest, a right which is under threat from heavy handed police legislation by the Baird Government.
Despite torrential rain over 1,000 people gathered in front of Parliament to hear speakers from the Nature Conservation Council, farming communities, Nurses and Midwives Association, Unions NSW, Groundwell Gloucester and Stop CSG Sydney speak out against these laws.

Greens welcome PEL 445 buyback as the ‘first step’ to a coal seam gas free Northern Rivers

NSW Greens Member for Ballina Tamara Smith and NSW Greens Mining Spokesperson Jeremy Buckingham today welcomed the NSW Government’s announcement they have bought back PEL 445, but have also called on them to provide certainty around the other active PELS in the region.
“The deafening roar from the community is being heard, and the buyback of PEL 445 is an important first step in stopping coal seam gas in the Northern Rivers,” Greens Member for Ballina Tamara Smith said.

Mining under National Parks should remain prohibited

The Greens NSW mining spokesperson Jeremy Buckingham today expressed concern that the Baird Government had made an agreement with coal mining company YanCoal, to allow them to mine under parts of the Goulburn River National Park, including the Goulburn River itself. 
"This agreement to allow mining under a National Park sets a very concerning precedent.  Mining should be prohibited in National Parks, without exception," said Greens MP Jeremy Buckingham.

E-Cigarettes flouting the law & should be treated like tobacco

The Greens NSW health spokesperson Jeremy Buckingham today said the sale of E-cigarettes flouted at least two laws, posed a danger in re-normalising smoking, and called on the NSW government to move more quickly to ensure  E-cigarettes are regulated as tobacco is regulated.
"The Greens are very concerned that big tobacco is using e-cigarettes to re-normalise smoking and attract non-smokers and young people to take up an addictive and potentially harmful product, said Greens MP Jeremy Buckingham.

Greg Hunt should reject Shenhua coal mine after critical expert advice

The Greens NSW mining spokesperson Jeremy Buckingham today said federal Environment Minister, Greg Hunt must reject the Shenhua Watermark coal mine in the heart of the productive Liverpool Plains, after the  Independent Expert Scientific Committee's advice on the Shenhua Watermark coal project was released . 
"If this mine goes ahead it will be a national disgrace," said Greens MP Jeremy Buckingham.
